Hints & Tips for Storing Furniture & Appliances

Moving furniture into storage? With a bit of planning, you can protect your belongings and make the most of your unit space. Here’s what we recommend.

Large Items

Wardrobes, cabinets, and tall boys should be completely emptied out and disassembled where possible before going into storage. This keeps your unit space efficient, protects the pieces during transport, and makes loading and unloading a whole lot easier.

Heavy Items

Whitegoods, dining tables, drawers, and dressers should always sit at the bottom of your unit, around the edges. This gives you a solid, stable base to build on and keeps weight distributed safely.

Electronics

TVs, computers, and printers are best stacked on top of heavier items with a blanket or protective cover over them to keep dust out — especially important during Townsville’s dry season. Bundle and secure all cords before storing so nothing gets snagged when you’re moving things around in the unit.

Appliances

Washing machines and dishwashers should be stored with their doors left slightly ajar — this stops mildew from forming inside, which is particularly worth watching in Townsville’s humid climate. Cover them with a breathable sheet to protect against dust, and face any glass doors or panels toward the unit walls to avoid scratches.

Glass and Breakables

Wrap glass and breakable items individually in packing paper or newspaper and use extra paper to fill any empty space inside the box — this stops things shifting in transit. Label every box clearly as ‘Fragile’ and never stack heavy items on top of them.

Furniture

Don’t place furniture directly on the floor of your unit. Use old sheets, drop sheets, or tarps as a protective layer underneath. Give everything a thorough vacuum before storing to remove food crumbs and organic matter, which can attract pests. In North Queensland’s heat and humidity, this step makes a real difference in keeping things fresh.
